Algebra Research Project

Would you like to be part of a research project on the effect of the use of our new NSF-funded digital materials? Participants receive free materials and a waiver of the fee into one of our institutes. Please read below for further details.

What might the development of algebra look like in the elementary years? What are some of the critical big ideas and strategies young children construct that might serve as important landmarks for teachers to notice, develop, and celebrate; what causes some of the misconceptions and challenges that develop; and, how might realistic contexts and representational models–for example, a “double number line,” “combination charts,” and the “ratio table”–support the development of algebra? We ran a think tank on the development of algebra at Math in the City for three years and as a result developed algebra sequences for grades 2-6. These are now published as part of the Contexts for Learning Mathematics series, and we are currently funded by NSF to develop digital professional development materials on this topic. This research project will focus on the use of these materials. Because this research is funded by NSF, it is free, but admission is by application only. You will be notified of acceptance by April 12th. Preference will be given to local teachers of grades 3 and 5, but applications from non-local and grades 2-6 teachers are also welcome.

Download the consent form for background information, procedures and for more details.

To apply, complete the application and sign the consent form. Please mail your completed application (application & consent form) to: Mathematics in the City, the City College of New York, School of Education, NAC 3/217, 160 Convent Avenue, New York, NY 10031.
