Mathematics in the City (MitC) is a nationally recognized research-based project in mathematics education reform. Teachers begin their MitC work with the Summer Institute (Level One*), a six day, inquiry workshop on teaching and learning mathematics.

  • In order to deepen their understanding of mathematics, teachers are asked to be learners in a mathematics environment where math is seen as the posing and solving of problems, the searching for patterns, and the construction of formulae, models, and strategies.
  • Participants will learn how to develop mental math strategies through mini-lessons, as well as how to turn their classrooms into math workshops.
  • Mathematical models (such as the open number line and the open array) that support the development of number and operation will be explored.
  • Newly created, interactive CD-Rom materials showing video of exemplary MitC classrooms will form an integral part of the institute.
Instructional staff includes: faculty from the City College of New York, the Freudenthal Institute in the Netherlands, and a team of MitC teacher leaders.

Cost: $1000.00 per participant, includes materials. For approved local teachers, this can be paid through a NYC Board of Education purchase order:

Vendor # RFC 988.190
Contract # 96000194
Tax # 13-1988190

 * Local teachers may be eligible to continue throughout the school year with fall, winter, and spring workshops from our Calendar of Events.

Teachers interested in being a part of the Summer Institute should complete the application form and attach the following:
  •  A statement describing your beliefs about the teaching and learning of mathematics, and why you are interested in taking the Summer Institute
  •  A resume, or a brief explanation of your education background.
