The Playground of Mathematics was co-produced
by Mathematics in the City and Roseville Video/NYC, with funding
from the National Science Foundation. The 53-minute documentary
focuses on the current mathematics education reform and features:
- real-life footage from exemplary Mathematics in the City classrooms,
- interviews with prominent mathematicians who explore what
it means to do mathematics and
- interviews with teachers, parents, and administrators who
reveal their own critical issues in the reform.
- a short animated piece on the cross-cultural and historical
development of mathematics.
The documentary can be used to propel teachers and
administrators into dialogue about the teaching and learning of
mathematics. It can also be a useful component in in-service or
pre-service teacher education, actively engaging participants in
creating new visions of practice.
Shown either in its entirety or in segments, the documentary
is a valuable overview of the math education reform for parent information
evenings. The Playground of Mathematics can enable the public
to better understand the issues involved in the reform that is currently
affecting mathematics education today.
The documentary--in its original length or in a shortened
version--is available on both VHS and DVD for teachers, administrators,
community groups, and parent organizations.
